Sale of onion at a subsidised rate to the public through fair price shops has begun in the district.A kg of big onion is sold at ₹35 to ration card holders. It is being marketed through National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India..A senior official of the department told The Hindu that the sale had been launched to stabilise onion prices in the open market. It was part of the market intervention initiative. It was expected that the move would bring down the prices in the market.The district received 15 metric tonnes of onion for sale through fair price shops. In the first phase, onions would be sold through 150 shops in the city. Depending upon the arrival, onions would be sold through the shops situated in rural areas as well.
