Sale of onions at ₹35 a kg began at 159 urban fair price shops in Thoothukudi district on Thursday.Minister for Food and Civil Supplies P. Venkataramanan had announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly that, in view of the rise in onion prices, onions would be sold at ₹35 a kg to ration card holders in urban areas through fair price shops in the first phase, with the objective of controlling the price rise and benefiting various sections of society.Accordingly, the sale began at urban fair price shops across the State. In Thoothukudi district, onions were made available at 159 urban fair price shops and Pannai Pasumai stores run by the Thoothukudi Agricultural Producers Cooperative Marketing Society.Depending on the number of ration cards attached to each shop, around 100 to 200 kg of onions were supplied to each urban fair price shop and Pannai Pasumai store in the district. Instructions were issued to sell one kg of onions per ration card so that the commodity reached a larger number of consumers.Cooperative Department Thoothukudi Regional Registrar R.
