The transfer market for professional football players has officially entered record territory. World Cup stars are now collectively generating $3.3 billion in transfer fees, a record figure that underscores how the sport’s biggest stage has become the world’s most expensive talent showcase.
That number sits inside an even larger one. FIFA’s Global Transfer Report for 2025 recorded $13.08 billion in international professional men’s football transfer fees, a 52.3% increase from 2024.
Where the money is going
English clubs, as usual, are writing the biggest checks. Premier League teams accounted for $3.82 billion of total transfer spending, reinforcing their role as the financial heavyweights of the sport.
Meanwhile, squad valuations heading into the 2026 World Cup have ballooned to approximately €13 billion, spread across 1,248 players tracked by Football Benchmark and Transfermarkt. France leads the pack with a squad valuation in the €1.5 to €1.6 billion range. Spain follows at €1.2 to €1.5 billion.
