COSATU and BOSA are calling for further fuel-levy relief and Road Accident Fund reform as rising petrol and diesel prices squeeze South African households.
Pressure is mounting on government to take further steps to reduce the tax burden built into South Africa’s fuel price as tensions between Iran and the United States continue to drive oil-market volatility and add pressure to household budgets.
The calls follow another steep fuel price increase yesterday and include demands for temporary levy relief, Road Accident Fund reform and targeted assistance for commuters and low-income households.
Petrol increased by R1.34 a litre, while diesel rose by R2.93 to R3.15 a litre.
The increase comes as renewed fighting between the US and Iran unsettles oil markets, with concerns about disruption to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz keeping crude prices elevated.
