Traditional SEO optimizes for a search bar. AI search optimizes for a citation. The rules are not the same.
Last year a logistics company in Dubai asked me why their website traffic was dropping even though their rankings in Google were stable. Their content was technically perfect: keyword-optimized, well-structured, authoritative. But more and more of their customers were not opening the browser and typing a query anymore. They were opening ChatGPT, or Perplexity, or just asking Google directly — and getting an answer that was written in the first paragraph of someone else's article, attributed by a little number.
The traffic was gone because the game changed. You can still rank for a keyword and lose the visit, because the AI answer now happens before the click. That is frustrating until you understand the new rule: in AI search, you do not want the click. You want the citation. The source list that appears under the answer is the new search results page — and being in it is a business model.
This guide is the practical version of what I have learned getting content found by the four systems that matter: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Each one retrieves, ranks, and cites differently. Optimize for each the way it actually works, not the way the marketing blogs describe it.
