A hunter has detailed the horrifying moment he heard the crunching of his own bones while he was attacked by a brown bear in Alaska.Jadon Nicoara, 27, was attacked on Thursday deep in the forest, 100 miles outside of Deadhorse.The father of two was hunting caribou with his cousin as they scaled the edge of a canyon and noticed the bushes above him begin to rustle.'I turned around to my right, and there was a bear just running, at probably 15 to 20 feet, straight toward me,' he told WBTV.'It was growling, its mouth was open, and it was just running full speed.'Nicoara was flung backwards and began to roll down as the bear started ripping him apart.'I just felt it bite my arm, and it was very surreal because everything happens so fast,' he said.'Then, it finally ended up on top of me, and it bit my face. It was just biting again and again, and I could hear all the bones crunching in my nose. I saw stars, and I was like, "OK, this is kind of where it ends." I thought I was going to be dead.' Then a bear charged him, knocking him back The bear then went for his hands and his foot as his cousin pulled out his handgun and emptied a full magazine toward the bear.The grizzly then made its way toward his cousin, Daniel, who told Komo News how the attack shifted to him.'So he charged me, and I emptied the rest of my magazine as he was charging,' he told the outlet.'Then either he knocked the gun out of my hand, or it fell out of my hand when he tackled me.'Daniel said he remembered to lie face down and put his hands over his neck as he played dead.The bear eventually ran off, leaving Nicoara and his cousin in shambles.Daniel, who is a doctor, was able to manage Nicoara's bleeding before they moved to a location where a helicopter could reach them. 'Then, it finally ended up on top of me, and it bit my face. It was just biting again and again, and I could hear all the bones crunching in my nose,' said Nicoara The bear then went for his hands and his foot as his cousin, Daniel, pulled out his handgun and emptied a full magazine toward the bearThey contacted rescuers but were told they would have to wait roughly two hours.'I was like, 'Oh my goodness, I don't know if I'm going to make it because I'm bleeding pretty good.' We were praying, and I was thinking about my girls. I was like, 'I need to make it home,' Nicoara said.'I just remember at one point looking around, and it was a gorgeous day. I'm like, 'How did this even happen? It's so surreal.'He was flown to Harborview Hospital for medical care and needs surgery, according to a fundraiser. Daniel, for his part, was treated for minor injuries. A GoFundMe for Nicoara's medical expenses has raised nearly $40,000 at the time of this report.Neither Nicoara nor Daniel could confirm if the bear had been injured, according to Komo. Daniel, who is a doctor, was able to manage Nicoara's bleeding before they moved to a location where a helicopter could reach them. They were flown to a hospital where Nicoara is recovering The Alaska Department of Fish and Game said an aircraft searched the area for the bear but was unable to find it.Alaska is responsible for roughly 29 percent of all fatal bear attacks in the US, according to KTUU.
