In comparison to the 13-player £200million recruitment drive of last summer — when the team needed reinforcements to cope with Europa League football — this has been a relatively sedate transfer window for Nottingham Forest.In fact, since Oliver Glasner’s appointment, Forest have shrunk their squad while raising the overall quality.A summer of fewer signings does not mean limited drama, as the club has looked to recruit in different positions. And there was the usual deadline-day flurry of activity… but only in the form of departures.It leaves Glasner well equipped as Forest begin a new era.Was this window a success or a failure?Forest did not manage to sign every single one of the players they pursued, and at times the summer had a familiar, chaotic feel. But they have done almost all of the business they intended to do when they made their pre-summer plan.Glasner was wary of making too many changes to a squad he felt underachieved last season. He did not believe a major overhaul was required.Ensuring that Elliot Anderson was the only significant departure was also a major success. Forest have kept the core together, including Morgan Gibbs-White, Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare and Neco Williams.Overall, the window has been a success.How much did they spend and how much did they bring in?Forest spent roughly £119million ($161m) on new signings and recouped more than £130million.The impressive £116million Forest got for Anderson was supplemented by smaller fees for Taiwo Awoniyi (Coventry City, £9m), Jota Silva (Olympiacos, £5m) and David Carmo (Olympiacos, undisclosed). West Ham also have an option to make Morato’s loan move permanent.Who have they signed?Xaver Schlager was the first through the door, joining as a free agent following the end of his contract with RB Leipzig.He was followed by central defender Ousmane Diomande (Sporting CP, £35million), striker Liam Delap (Chelsea, initial £45m) and right wing-back Daniel Munoz (Crystal Palace, £22m). Forest also spent £17million to sign Gustavo Sa (Famalicao), who immediately joined sister club Olympiacos on loan.Were there any deals they wanted to do that they did not get over the line?A few. The headline was the attempt to lure Harrison Armstrong to the City Ground from Everton. A £40million deal was agreed for the 19-year-old, before the Everton hierarchy pulled the plug following a backlash from supporters about selling their homegrown talent.At the start of the window, they made an offer for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall, but could not agree a deal. They also held an interest in Tijjani Reijnders, who ultimately joined Al Qadsiah from Manchester City and failed in a late bid for 19-year-old Trey Nyoni from Liverpool.Late in the window, Forest made an approach for England goalkeeper Dean Henderson, which was knocked back by Crystal Palace.Nottingham Forest could not tempt Crystal Palace to sell Dean Henderson (Sebastian Frej/Getty Images)Forest had several wing-back targets before landing Munoz, including Celta Vigo’s Javi Rueda and Anan Khalaili, who joined Crystal Palace from Union Saint-Gilloise. Forest had been linked with 20-year-old Givairo Read, but could not agree a deal with Feyenoord.Dodo, Fiorentina’s 27-year-old right-back, was a fallback option throughout the summer.On deadline day, Forest renewed their interest in 31-year-old winger Jacob Murphy, but Newcastle were reluctant to lose one of their dressing-room leaders.Are there still any obvious gaps?Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic, Diomande and Jair Cunha are their only natural central defenders, following loan moves away for Morato, Zach Abbott and Tyler Bindon.But Forest have other players who can slot into the back three, if required. Nicolo Savona is comfortable there, as is — on the right side in particular — Ola Aina. Ryan Yates is also capable of dropping into the back line and the club believe they have sufficient cover. It is not regarded as an area of concern.If goalkeeper Matz Sels picks up an injury, John Victor might have some work to do to restore faith in his abilities among fans. His most recent first-team appearance was disastrous — away at Aston Villa in January, he was injured while giving a goal. But there is a belief at Forest that he is better than that moment might have suggested.Glasner stuck to a 3-4-2-1 formation at Crystal Palace, but has said he will be more flexible at Forest. With Omari Hutchinson and Dilane Bakwa having departed, Forest have gone from being well-stocked out wide to having just Dan Ndoye and Callum Hudson-Odoi.But that would only become an issue if Glasner plays with traditional wingers, which feels unlikely.Do they have a squad to achieve their goals for the season?Forest are ambitious to establish themselves as a club that can regularly compete in European football. The goal this season is to take a significant step towards that target.With no European football — and last season underlined how much strain that can be on resources — and only the FA Cup to compete for beyond the Premier League, Forest do not need a huge squad.Glasner has spoken about wanting to have a squad of 23 or 24 senior players, supported by young players.It feels as though they now have something close to that.Delap feels like a huge signing, with high potential, and he can make an immediate impact. In Chris Wood, they have a proven Premier League striker — and somebody who can be a fine mentor to Delap.Will the head coach be happy?Early in the summer, Glasner stated that he wanted to see Forest add quality over quantity.During the pre-season training camp in Portugal — shortly after the signing of Schlager — Glasner wanted to see Forest sign a central defender, a full-back, another central midfielder and a striker.Three of those boxes were ticked off with the additions of Diomande, Delap and Munoz, and in the weeks since the training camp, Glasner has become more convinced that James McAtee can shine in a deeper midfield role.Glasner regards Diomande as capable of completing a perfect back three alongside Milenkovic and Murillo.Ousmane Diomande is seen as an ideal player for a back-three defence (Shaun Botterill/Getty Images)Delap ticks the boxes Glasner wanted from a player with physical presence and pace, who can give opposition defenders a constant headache.Forest spent much of the summer searching for a wing-back with similar attributes to Munoz, doubting that Palace would sell. But landing him is a major boost to Glasner, who gets to work with a player he trusts.So, while Forest did fail in a late effort to add one or two more — and the search for a wing-back felt a little haphazard — he will be satisfied with the work done.What will be their priority in January?Much will depend on how McAtee settles into his new role.
