Two police constables have been placed under suspension after an undertrial escaped from their custody.Police sources said Vilathikulam police arrested C. Niranjan, 19, of Mappillaiyoorani on the outskirts of Thoothukudi on February 12 in connection with a criminal case and remanded him in judicial custody. He was lodged in Kovilpatti sub-jail.However, Niranjan escaped from the sub-jail on March 5 and was nabbed on the next day itself when he came to meet his girlfriend from Meenakshipuram near Vilathikulam. After being produced in the court, he was taken to the Peroorani sub-jail.After he was granted bail, Niranjan did not attend the trial of the case. Subsequently, the Vilathikulam court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.When he came to appear before the Vilathikulam court on August 27 to cancel the non-bailable warrant, the police arrested Niranjan. After being remanded in judicial custody, the police took him to Kovilpatti sub-jail.When the police took him to an eatery at Subramaniapuram for lunch, he managed to give a slip. After an intensive operation, Vilathikulam police caught him on the same day from his hideout in Mappillaiyoorani. He was taken to Palayamkottai Central Jail after being remanded in judicial custody.Against this backdrop, Superintendent of Police R.
