Tesla stock surged 5.1% on August 21, closing around $362.86, making it one of the top performers in the S&P 500. The catalyst: Nevada gave the green light for up to 5,000 robotaxis to operate in Las Vegas, and investors are now counting down the days to a major Cybercab launch event.
That event is scheduled for September 3, 2026, an invite-only affair at Tesla’s Austin, Texas headquarters.
From concept car to public roads
The Cybercab first appeared at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event back in October 2024. At the time, it looked like one of Elon Musk’s characteristically ambitious moonshots: a vehicle with no steering wheel, no pedals, and no pretense of ever being driven by a human.
Fast forward to February 2026, and production began at Gigafactory Texas. By late June, engineering test vehicles were rolling on public roads. The timeline from unveiling to physical production took roughly 16 months.
