MANILA, Philippines — Beyond ceremonies and words of gratitude, everyday heroes should also get fair compensation, safe working conditions, social protection, and opportunities as they work to keep communities running every day, Sen. Loren Legarda said in a statement on Monday as the country observed National Heroes Day.
“Madaling tawagin silang bayani kapag may bagyo, may sakuna, may krisis, o kapag may okasyon. Pero kung tunay nating pinahahalagahan ang kanilang ambag, dapat nakikita iyon sa kanilang sahod, benepisyo, kaligtasan sa trabaho, kabuhayan, at proteksyon para sa kanilang pamilya,” Legarda said.
(“It’s easy to call them heroes whenever there’s a storm, a disaster, a crisis, or when there’s an occasion. But if we really value their contributions, they must see it in their wages, benefits, safety at work, livelihood, and protection for their families.”)
To achieve those goals, Legarda called for stronger implementation of laws protecting workers and communities and the passage of pending measures for barangay health workers, disaster responders, waste workers, farmers, fisherfolk, and employees required to work during calamities.
