MANILA, Philippines — Workers who continue to sustain the economy during calamities need stronger protection, fair compensation, safe working arrangements, and adequate support for the added risks and expenses they face during storms and other calamities, Sen. Loren Legarda said in a statement issued on Monday, even as many parts of the country continue to be hit by rainfall and flooding.
Legarda singled out workers who continue to perform their duties despite severe weather and transport disruptions. These are workers in transport, food supply, healthcare, utilities, media, retail, construction, agriculture, education, public services, and other onsite sectors.
“Behind every number is a Filipino worker who gets up every day to earn and have something to take home to their family. Let’s imagine an employee who looks for a ride during a flood, pays a higher fare, and travels longer while worrying if he can get home safely to his family,” Legarda said in Filipino, noting that the number of these workers has increased.
