The body of a newborn baby was found at a landfill near the village of Shishmantsi in the Plovdiv region, prompting a criminal investigation by Bulgarian authorities.
The discovery was reported on August 26 after workers sorting waste on a conveyor belt found the baby's body among the garbage. Part of the waste collected from containers in Plovdiv is transported to the landfill in Shishmantsi.
An autopsy found traumatic marks on the newborn's body, but investigators have not yet established when the injuries occurred. Authorities are examining whether the child was killed before being discarded or whether the injuries were sustained after death as the body was thrown away and transported with the waste.
According to preliminary information, the baby may have initially been placed in a garbage container before being collected by a waste truck and transported to the landfill.
Pre-trial proceedings have been opened based on the case file of the Rakovski District Police Department and are being conducted under the supervision of the Plovdiv District Prosecutor's Office.
