THE RELATIVE of a woman who was shot dead on Friday has described the incident as a senseless killing.In an emotional plea yesterday, a relative of 49-year-old Mirissia Weekes, of Dundonald Hill, St James, called for an end to gun violence.The relative, who asked to go unnamed, said Weekes, a mother of four, did not deserve to ‘die like that’.“This gun violence needs to be stopped. Too many families in this country are losing innocent relatives and most of the time is senseless killing, and they don’t deserve to get killed like that. They need to stop playing games with people’s lives,” she said.She urged for people to ‘come to the table’ to work on how best to stop such instances.“Crime is out of control and like nobody realising it is out of control,” she continued.She said Weekes, who was hard of hearing, is believed to have been returning home when she was fatally shot on Friday.“They say how she body was positioned, it looked like she was heading back home because they say she was face down. She was face down in a pool of blood,” the relative added.Weekes’s killing has shocked the family, the relative reported.“She was a quiet person. She never interferes with nobody. Honestly speaking, these children cannot catch themselves. I can’t even wrap my head around it because like everybody in shock,” she continued.The relative said that the family were now hopeful that the investigation would ensure justice. She said they were awaiting information on the autopsy, which is expected to be conducted this week.On Friday, Weekes was reportedly shot in the head and transported by a neighbour to the St James Medical Complex. She was later transferred to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where she died around 5.45 p.m.Police say they received reports of a shooting in progress along Dundonald Hill, St James, near Fort Dundonald Villas. Officers responded to the incident and were led to a pathway believed to be the scene of the crime. They recovered six spent shells and five live rounds of 9mm ammunition from the scene.Police say preliminary enquiries reveal the suspect was shooting in the direction of passers-by. Police subsequently detained a suspect.
