MANILA, Philippines — Students of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) have questioned the university’s decision to confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on President Marcos and warned that it could be seen as an endorsement of an administration facing good governance issues.
In a joint statement on Saturday evening, PLM’s Supreme Student Council, along with 33 other local student councils and organizations, criticized the resolution of the board of regents (BOR), the highest policymaking body of the university, to award the degree to Marcos.
“To bestow such an honor upon a sitting President whose administration remains subject to serious questions concerning transparency, accountability, human rights, and public service risks turning an academic distinction into an endorsement of a record that remains deeply contested,” the student groups said.
