MANILA, Philippines — Students of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) are questioning the university administration’s decision to confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
They said they were not consulted and warned that the recognition could be seen as an endorsement of an administration facing issues over good governance.
They also cited PLM’s history, invoking the memory of Liliosa Hilao, a PLM student journalist who was the first reported student activist to die in detention during martial law under the Marcos Sr. dictatorship.
Marcos on Aug. 27 received a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa (Latin for “for the sake of honor”), from PLM during the graduation rites of the city government-run university.
