Morocco’s King Mohammed VI is ending a busy August marked by thousands of royal pardons, diplomatic gains over Western Sahara, renewed tensions over Ceuta and a series of engagements spanning Africa, the Americas and Asia.
The month is closing with Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch representing the monarch at an extraordinary African Union summit in Luanda, Angola, on August 30, where African leaders are discussing conflict prevention and security challenges across the continent.
The AU engagement follows several weeks in which Mohammed VI, Africa’s wealthiest king, combined domestic royal duties with significant developments in Morocco’s foreign relations, particularly around territorial disputes central to Rabat’s diplomacy.
US and Colombia hand Morocco diplomatic gains
One of the month’s most significant developments came from Washington, where US President Donald Trump reaffirmed recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in a message marking the 27th anniversary of Mohammed VI’s accession to the throne.
