Ekurhuleni Deputy Chief of Police Julius Mkhwanazi has cost the city R1.27 million in salary, benefits and other expenses while on suspension, according to a Gauteng government response.

The figure of R1 272 211 was disclosed in response to a question to Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo.

Mkhwanazi was suspended on November 11, 2025, pending the finalisation of disciplinary proceedings.

According to the response, his disciplinary hearing relating to the Blue Lights Installation matter has sat on several occasions since February, with another sitting scheduled for August 11 and 12.
