The Independent Police Investigative Directorate's (IPID) investigation into the disappearance of precious stones worth R14.9 million has escalated with the arrest of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
Mkhwanazi's arrest came hours after IPID confirmed that a second suspect had been taken into custody on Friday evening as part of the same investigation.
According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the suspect was arrested at a house in Kensington shortly before 8pm and was taken to Germiston Police Station.
