South Africa - Johannesburg - 20 July 2026 - Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi and an officer known as "Witness K", appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on in connection with the alleged theft of precious stones worth R14.9 million.
Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD), acting chief, Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested three times in separate criminal investigations, paid a combined R80,000 in bail to secure his release in two cases and is now back in custody after being linked to an alleged R15 million precious stones robbery.
Mkhwanazi is facing multiple criminal cases, ranging from fraud and corruption to defeating the ends of justice.
His latest arrest marks the third time he has appeared on the wrong side of the law in recent months.
The recent arrest was made on July 17 at his home in Ekurhuleni.
