The Samoa Bureau of Statistics (SBS) reports that the supply of produce at the country's local markets increased sharply in July while overall prices fell, although taro and bananas became significantly more expensive.The SBS Local Market Survey for July 2026 found that the overall volume of agricultural produce supplied to markets increased by 67 per cent compared with June, while the overall price index declined by 4 per cent.
Despite the overall decline, the average price of taro rose by 26 per cent to $6.48 per kilogram.
This came as taro supply fell by 6 per cent to 2,779 kilograms, while Banana supply increased by 11 per cent from June, but its average price rose by 32 per cent.
The SBS said the rise in overall produce volume was driven largely by greater supplies of pumpkin, Chinese cabbage and tomatoes.
Pumpkin supply increased by 287 per cent, Chinese cabbage by 175 per cent and tomatoes by 95 per cent.
