The latest report from the Samoa Bureau of Statistics showed transport prices increased by 20.3 per cent over the 12 months to June 2026, making it the largest contributor to the rise in inflation.
A sharp rise in fuel and transport costs pushed Samoa’s Consumer Price Index up by 5.8 per cent in June compared with the same month last year.
Diesel recorded one of the largest increases, rising by 77.4 per cent, while petrol prices were up by 37 per cent. Private vehicle registration costs increased by 25 per cent, while the cost of a return airfare to Pago Pago rose by 11.5 per cent.
Transport alone contributed 2.8 percentage points to the overall 5.8 per cent annual increase in the Consumer Price Index.
Compared with May, consumer prices increased by 2.8 per cent, which the bureau mainly attributed to higher fuel prices and the cost of other imported goods during June.
