An up ramp of the GD Naidu flyover in Coimbatore city remains incomplete resulting in traffic congestions at Uppilipalayam.J. Sathish, director of Kongu Global Forum, said several vehicles coming from Trichy Road or Gandhipuram need not go to Uppilipalayam to take the Avinashi Road flyover if the ramp near Anna Statue junction is completed. “The incomplete works are proving to be counter-productive and the ramp is not serving its intended purpose,” he said.Secretary of the Coimbatore Consumer Cause K. Kathirmathiyon said the flyover presently has an up ramp near Peelamedu and the up ramp proposed near Anna Statue has not been constructed. The Madras High Court, in its order dated May 22, 2025, examined the circumstances relating to the modification of the original design and drawings. The Court found “serious irregularities in the manner in which the pillars were relocated” and held that the “alteration was intended to serve private interests” and found the decision to be “unfair and discriminatory.”It directed the Highways Department to construct the pillars for the up ramp in accordance with the original design and drawings, and demolish the pillars constructed at the modified locations. The Government filed an appeal on July 24 last year against the above order. However, there is no stay against the operation of the Single Judge’s order and the appeal is pending for more than a year. In these circumstances, the public should not continue to suffer indefinitely because of a private dispute in a public infrastructure work, he said. The State government should either implement the High Court order delivered last May by constructing the ramp according to the original design or should direct the authorities concerned to take necessary steps for early listing and disposal of the writ appeal.“We respectfully submit that the issue should not be allowed to remain unresolved any longer. An essential component of a major public infrastructure project should be made available to the public at the earliest,” he added. Published - August 29, 2026 07:44 pm IST
