At least 37 people have been killed and 42 injured after a Russian drone strike on a facility near Kyiv triggered a major fire and a series of explosions, Ukrainian authorities said. Four of those injured are children, while seven people have been hospitalized.
The attack occurred at around 8:10 p.m. on August 28 in the village of Myla, about 5 kilometers west of Kyiv along the Kyiv-Chop highway. A Russian drone struck or fell on the grounds of an enterprise, according to the Prosecutor General's Office, setting off a large fire followed by detonations.
The facility appeared to have been storing explosive materials, although Ukrainian authorities have not said whether it was a military or civilian enterprise. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the legality of storing such materials at the site and whether the operator had the required permits and approvals.
The attack also caused extensive damage in the surrounding area. At least 50 residential buildings were damaged, along with a care facility for elderly people and people with disabilities. A total of 381 people, including 59 children, were evacuated from the emergency zone.
Taras Didych, head of the Dmytrivka community, which includes Myla, was among those killed. According to Kyiv Oblast authorities, he was one of the first people to arrive at the scene following the explosions.
