New battery-electric buses to be deployed in Cape Town’s electric public transport system are scheduled for delivery from 2027. The public transport operator in the South African capital has chosen the Volvo BZR LE Electric model, based on the BZR platform, which was introduced by Volvo Buses in March 2024. The bodywork is being supplied by South African manufacturer Gauteng Bus and Coach Centre in Johannesburg.

The partners have not disclosed performance specifications, but according to Volvo’s website, the Volvo BZR Low Entry Electric is available as a two- or three-axle vehicle with a length of 9.8 to 14.8 metres. The powertrain delivers 200 or 400 kW, and the battery capacity reaches up to 630 kWh nominally. The “LE” in the model name stands for low-entry buses, which feature easy access and improved accessibility.

Regarding the 38 units ordered, Volvo states only that the installed energy capacity is tailored to Cape Town’s operational requirements. Transitioning from diesel to electric buses represents a significant shift for the city. The bus manufacturer has said that this requires careful planning, coordination and close collaboration between numerous stakeholders. Volvo Buses is acting as a strategic advisor throughout the process. The charging infrastructure for the electric buses will be managed by the City of Cape Town, while the bus bodywork will be developed and built by Gauteng Bus and Coach Centre.
