Cape Town's first MyCiTi battery-electric bus arrives as part of sustainable transport expansion

As part of the MyCiTi bus service expansion into the metro-south east region, the City of Cape Town is acquiring 38 low-floor battery-electric buses.

These 12-metre Volvo BZRLE vehicles mark a major milestone, featuring the first MyCiTi bus bodies designed and manufactured locally in Gauteng, South Africa.

While the full fleet is slated for operational roll-out in 2027, the buses are expected to arrive during the current calendar year.

Councillor Rob Quintas, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, described the arrival of the first e-bus as a pivotal moment in the service's 16-year history, signalling a shift toward a more sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective public transport network.
