Durban-based community organiser and cultural advocate Kenthren Govender is on a mission to make ancient faith relevant to a new generation.
Through his Durban-based initiative, the Youth Bhajan Service, Govender hopes to bridge the gap between traditional Hindu wisdom and the modern mental health challenges faced by young people today by combining devotional singing with open discussions on contemporary issues.
The next service will take place on Sunday, August 30, at the Greenwood Park Shree Ranganathar Temple, 377 Parkstation Road. While supported by the Greenwood Park Temple Society, the Youth Bhajan Service is not affiliated to any single temple or organisation, having been established as a personal passion project by Govender to serve the broader community.
The idea was born from what Govender believes is a need for greater dialogue about the everyday challenges experienced by young people and others, including loss, anxiety, fear, financial difficulties and relationship problems.
