The US labor market just got a quiet regrade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its preliminary benchmark revision on August 28, 2026, showing that total nonfarm payroll employment for the year ending March 2026 was overstated by 79,000 jobs, a correction of 0.1%. Private employment took a slightly larger hit, revised down by 178,000 jobs, also 0.1%.

What the revision actually says

This year’s revision is the smallest since 2021. The prior year’s preliminary revision had clocked in at roughly 911,000 jobs to the downside. The sector breakdown tells a more nuanced story. Retail and manufacturing were the primary drags, coming in weaker than the original estimates. Construction and transportation, by contrast, held up better than first reported.

The revision is preliminary. A final benchmark will be published in February 2027, which will lock in the official numbers and potentially refine the sector-level picture further.
