There is anticipation among the teaching faculty in Bharathiar University that the senior-most among them will be entrusted with the responsibility of Interim Vice-Chancellor, on the lines of the initiative taken by the Higher Education Department for improving administration in two other State universities: Alagappa University and Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. There is a provision in the statutes of all State universities that the senior-most professor shall exercise the powers and perform the duties of the Vice-Chancellor, in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, they point out.In the case of Bharathiar University, what used to be a three-member V-C Committee is now left with only the Convenor: Additional Chief Secretary to Government. The tenure of one member of the V-C Committee expired, and the other member R. Durgashankar, Secretary and Trustee of JCT Institutions, resigned after the TVK-led government assumed charge.According to a senior faculty member, administration of the university with an In-Charge Vice-Chancellor, with powers to perform the duties of the V-C, will be far better than persisting with the V-C Committee.Nominated to syndicateThe Governor-Chancellor has nominated A. Sangamithra, Professor and Head, Department of Economics, Bharathiar University, as a member of the university Syndicate for a three-year tenure. Published - August 28, 2026 08:42 pm IST
