A fresh yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for multiple UK regions today, with frequent lightning strikes and heavy rain forecast for affected regions10:33, 28 Aug 2026Updated 11:03, 28 Aug 2026The Met Office has issued a fresh thunderstorm warning for 64 areas across the UK, warning heavy downpours could spark flooding, travel chaos and power cuts.‌The new warning, in place today from 12pm until 9pm, covers several major cities, including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Sheffield.‌The Met Office said thunderstorms are expected to develop from Friday afternoon, with northern England, much of Wales and central and eastern England set to bear the brunt. Flooding of some homes and businesses is likely, it added.‌Up to 40mm could fall in areas seeing repeated downpours, with lightning and hail creating "additional hazards" in a few locations.Brits have been warned to "consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding," and prepare an "emergency" flood kit, packed with basic supplies like torches and batteries, key documents and phone numbers, as well as water, food and medication.‌"While many areas will miss the heaviest downpours, heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during Friday afternoon and evening," the Met Office's warning reads"The focus of showers and thunderstorms over will be northern England and much of Wales during the early afternoon before extending over central and eastern England through the afternoon."Thunderstorms will bring 10-20mm of rain in a short period in a few places with 30-40mm possible should anywhere see repeated downpours. Lightning and hail will be additional hazards in a few locations."‌Throughout the day, driving conditions are likely be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus. Delays to train services are also possible.The Met Office adds: "Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.
