The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar announced on Thursday, August 27, that Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, met with Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, and President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran to discuss ways to strengthen regional security and stability.
In a post published on the social media platform X, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry stated that the two sides in Tehran consulted on a proposed framework to establish a joint temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and the implementation of a joint plan for mine clearance in the strait.
During the meeting, the Qatari Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of respecting the sovereignty of neighboring countries and preserving freedom of navigation, calling for continued diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and resolve disputes through dialogue.
Abbas Araghchi expressed appreciation for Qatar’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and support dialogue.
Given claims raised by certain Islamic Republic officials regarding the alleged captivity of three Iranian fighter jet pilots held by Qatar, it was expected that part of the discussions would address this issue; however, official reports did not clarify whether Iran and Qatar consulted on the fate of the Iranian pilots.
