MANILA, Philippines — There should be no reason to charge Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez if the Office of the Ombudsman no longer has any credible witness, the lawmaker’s lawyer said on Thursday.

In a statement, Romualdez’s lawyer and spokesperson Ade Fajardo said they saw no reason to charge the former House speaker and hoped the Ombudsman would dismiss the complaints.

According to Fajardo, 32 witnesses—all former personnel of ex-Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Elizaldy Co—have either withdrawn their accusations or given testimonies favorable to Romualdez’s case.

“We do not see a reason for the charges; that’s why our prayer and request to the Office of the Ombudsman is to dismiss these charges, junk these complaints against former Speaker Romualdez,” Fajardo said.
