Having failed to change Canadians’ minds about last week’s collapse of trade talks with the United States, Donald Trump has been reduced to changing names.

The spectacle of the president signing an executive order on Thursday that he claimed changes the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” will of course be treated here as the empty, almost comical gesture that it is.
