President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he is thinking about changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America as trade tensions between the United States and Canada escalate.“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” he posted on Truth Social. He previously signed an executive order that mandated federal agencies change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.Since trade talks between the two nations collapsed last weekend, the president has feuded with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. On Monday, the Canadian politician slammed Trump’s tariff threats and vowed to cut off Ontario’s electricity and critical minerals from the U.S.
In a previous Truth Social post, Trump called Ford’s remarks “bluster” while arguing Canada heavily relies on the U.S.“Without the United States, Canada couldn’t survive,” Trump wrote in part. “It’s where they get all of their money and, because of their current bad leadership, primarily Governor Carney, and his Flunky, Ford, they will not be allowed to keep taking advantage of the United States — Their key to survival.”“Remember, much of the Electricity, Oil, and Gas that Canada gets is transported through the U.S.A.,” he continued. “Someone should get these clowns to ‘fall in line’ or, the consequences for Canada will be far WORSE!”Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive components, and steel imported from Canada into the U.S. starting next year. That announcement was separate from the 50% U.S. tariffs that have already taken effect.Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to implement “dollar-for-dollar” retaliatory tariffs by Sept. 8. In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing,” he said. “This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec.
