On a working day, employees of municipalities in Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram and other government offices in Paramakudi, Keelakarai and surrounding areas went on mass casual leave (CL) on Thursday, seeking the government’s attention to their various demands.According to association representatives, their demands included filling vacancies and providing promotions. Despite appeals and demonstrations in the past, the government had not fulfilled them, even after assurances from Ministers and senior officials, including those in the rank of Secretary to the government. The employees demanded that transfers be held through counselling, as in other departments. This would help staff relocate on mutual terms without causing inconvenience to others. There were also anomalies in salaries, which the government had not looked into. The differences in pay scales among personnel should be rectified at the earliest, as they would affect employees at the time of superannuation, they said. The new government had promised to look into their demands, and hence, by taking mass CL, they sought to draw its attention, the agitating staff said. However, they admitted that work at the offices had come to a grinding halt, as members of the public were taken aback on arriving at the government offices and had to return.
