CALAPAN CITY — The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) chapter in Oriental Mindoro has joined more than 85 IBP chapters nationwide in a synchronized effort on Thursday to help decongest jails and expand access to legal and basic services for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
As part of the nationwide initiative, the chapter conducted a legal aid and assistance mission at the Calapan City District Jail, which houses 155 PDLs.
The activity sought to advance access to justice while upholding the rights and dignity of people behind bars, according to the IBP Oriental Mindoro chapter.
The lawyers also partnered with the Oriental Mindoro Medical Society, whose members provided the detainees free medical checkups.
