Residents of Onya community in the Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State have raised the alarm over the worsening erosion along the River Niger, saying the community is gradually being swallowed by the river.
The residents said the erosion, which has persisted for more than two decades, had destroyed homes, farmlands, schools, shrines and ancestral burial grounds, with about 10 metres of land reportedly lost annually in some areas.
President-General of the Ndoshimili Development Union, Mr. Ike Onyenokwe, described the situation as alarming and warned that the community could become extinct if urgent action was not taken.
According to him, the erosion has continued to eat into the community, destroying properties and threatening the lives of residents.
