Fatal Residents of Hanover Park are left reeling after a shooting incident on Tuesday night resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy.

Hanover Park residents say they are increasingly living with the fear and frustration of violence after a 17-year-old boy was shot dead and a 35-year-old woman was wounded in Newfields on Tuesday night.

Multiple gunshots rang out at about 7.30pm on an open field next to Surran Road. When the shooting stopped, residents found the teenager lying dead with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and shoulder. A 35-year-old woman was also found nearby with a gunshot wound to her back. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that Philippi police had opened cases of murder and attempted murder.

“Philippi police registered a murder and an attempted murder case following a shooting incident on Tuesday night (2026-08-25) at 19:30 on an open field next to Surran Road, Newfields, Philippi, in which a 17-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded and a 35-year-old female injured.
