Fuelled by viral recipes like Biscoff cheesecake and the “protein-maxxing” craze, the dairy product is landing in more trolleys than ever, with Tesco reporting a near one-third jump in sales since 2024.I personally switched my breakfast from cereal to Greek yoghurt a couple of years ago to add more protein into my diet and to keep me satiated all morning, and now I can’t get enough of the stuff. In fact, I’m not ashamed to admit that I was ranked among the top buyers for Greek yoghurt in my local supermarket, according to my Nectar card overview last year. When it comes to selecting a Greek yoghurt at the supermarket, there are many options available now. For traditionalists, you want to look for the words “strained” or “authentic” to make sure you get real Greek yogurt that’s made by removing liquid whey to achieve its thick, velvety texture. The “Greek-style” label often appears on tubs which often have thinner texture as it’s left un- or lightly strained. In any case, I’d choose those with a short ingredient list, and avoid unnecessary additions like thickeners or stabilisers.Another thing to note is the mention of live cultures. While all yoghurts start with bacterias, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus added to warm milk, some products are heated after fermentation which kills the probiotics.
