Australia has drawn a new line between human creativity and artificial intelligence in music, with fully AI-generated songs set to be excluded from the country’s official music charts.
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), which runs Australia’s national music charts, has updated its Charts Code of Practice to prevent wholly AI-generated recordings from qualifying for chart rankings and ARIA awards.
The new rules will apply from the chart dated August 31, which will be published on August 28, 2026.
Under the new rules, music created with generative AI can still qualify if it is ‘substantially human made’, complies with relevant copyright and other laws, and does not raise concerns about streaming or chart manipulation. AI used in a supporting role will therefore remain permitted.
The policy follows controversy surrounding Australian DJ and producer Josh Fawaz’s AI-assisted version of Madonna’s Like a Prayer.
