Senior EU figure backs views of Italian prime minister on Brussels business red tape
Roberta Metsola, the European Parliament President had thrown her weight behind Giorgia Meloni’s call for more “common sense” in EU policymaking on Wednesday, putting competitiveness and deregulation at the heart of Europe’s future.
Speaking at the annual Rimini Meeting, a major annual Italian political and cultural gathering, Metsola argued that Europe needs to cut bureaucracy, strengthen its single market for European companies to compete globally.
“Giorgia Meloni was right, we need more ‘common sense solutions,’” Metsola said.
She pointed to the EU’s packaging rules – which entered into force on 12 August – as an example of regulation that can backfire.
