Johannesburg roads remain deadly, with 213 motorists arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in just one week, as a fatal crash in Douglasdale highlights the devastating consequences of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said the arrests were made between August 17 and 23, 2026, during high-visibility operations, roadside checks, and targeted anti-drunk-driving enforcement across the city.
The crackdown comes as police investigate a fatal two-vehicle crash in the early hours of Sunday at the intersection of Douglas Drive and Taylor Road in Douglasdale.
According to the JMPD, both vehicles were travelling north along Douglas Drive when a blue BMW 320i allegedly collided with the rear of a white Kia Pegas.
The impact caused the Kia driver to lose control, veer off the road, and crash into a private property’s boundary wall.
