The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has arrested 211 motorists for driving under the influence (DUI) in just one week as authorities intensify efforts to curb reckless behaviour on the city’s roads.
The arrests were made during coordinated enforcement operations, roadblocks, and targeted patrols conducted across Johannesburg between 20 and 26 July 2026.
According to the JMPD, drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes and pedestrian deaths in the city, prompting the deployment of specialised units, regional operational teams, and Alcohol Evidence Centres (AECs) to identify and remove intoxicated motorists before tragedy strikes.
In a statement, the JMPD said the high number of arrests underscores the continued disregard many motorists have for road safety.
“Arresting 211 intoxicated drivers in a single week highlights an ongoing, reckless disregard for human life on our roads. Driving under the influence is not an oversight, it is a conscious choice that puts every road user at risk.”
