Despite Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar seeking the Centre’s approval in June for a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) connecting Bengaluru with Mysuru, Kanakapura, Tumakuru, Chickballapur, and Kolar, the Karnataka government has now clarified that no RRTS corridor connecting Bengaluru with neighbouring cities has been approved or formulated so far.The clarification was issued in response to a question raised in the Karnataka Legislative Council on August 18. The government stated that there are currently no approved RRTS corridors connecting Bengaluru with neighbouring cities such as Mysuru, Tumakuru, Kolar, and Chickballapur.The development comes barely two months after Mr. Shivakumar pushed for the proposed regional rapid rail network as part of efforts to improve connectivity around Bengaluru, reduce pressure on the city’s road infrastructure, and support the growth of surrounding urban centres.On June 10, Mr. Shivakumar met Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi and submitted a proposal seeking approval for RRTS connectivity between Bengaluru and surrounding towns.
