Six students from Sharif University of Technology have been expelled by order of the disciplinary committee in connection with the January protests. Concurrently, reports indicate an increase in summonses and disciplinary actions against students across several Iranian universities ahead of the new academic year.
Bahmanabadi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at Sharif University, defended the disciplinary committee’s actions on Tuesday, August 25, in an interview with the Fars News Agency. He claimed that the expelled students engaged in acts such as burning the “flag of the Islamic Republic” or raising the “monarchist flag” on campus.
According to him, a total of 236 Sharif students were referred to the disciplinary council, with formal cases opened for 115 individuals due to what he termed “existing documentation.” Approximately 40 students were summoned to the disciplinary council for what were described as “more serious infractions.”
The Vice Chancellor outlined the allegations as “raising the monarchist flag, insulting the flag of the Islamic Republic, carrying cold weapons, physical altercations, inciting chaos and rioting, and chanting norm-breaking slogans.” Several cases also pertain to student activities in cyberspace.
