Four persons were arrested for reportedly hunting a wild boar inside the Guthiyalathur Forest Reserve in the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) here on Monday evening.According to the Forest Department, forest guards attached to the Kadambur Forest Range were on routine patrol in the forest boundary area under the Gunri Division when they noticed four persons attempting to flee through the forest. They were identified as Madesh, Rangan, Sadaiappan and Khari, all residents of Puduthotti Colony in Gundri village.The guards intercepted and searched them and found that they were carrying the wild boar meat in polythene covers. During interrogation, the four allegedly confessed to entering the Guthiyalathur Forest Reserve with a dog, hunting the animal and carrying its meat after cutting the carcass into pieces.A wildlife crime case was registered against the four by the Kadambur Forest Range. On the orders of the Deputy Director of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, the accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate No. I, Gobichettipalayam, on Tuesday and remanded in judicial custody.The Forest Department said the wild boar is a protected species listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, as amended in 2022.
