The decision to allocate €6.1 billion to Ukraine as part of the defense component of the EU loan includes funding for the procurement of antiballistic weapons.
Ukrinform reported this, citing European Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari as saying at at a briefing in Brussels on Tuesday.
Asked whether Ukraine is allowed to purchase U.S.-made interceptor missiles with funds allocated under the latest tranche of EU defense assistance to Ukraine, the spokesperson clarified that the package includes funding for antiballistic weapons. However, no exemptions from the rules were included in the procurement schedules submitted by Ukraine, meaning that the weapons must be ordered from European or Ukrainian suppliers only.
“We cannot comment on the procurement schedules; they are confidential. But there are no derogations in this round. This means that the relevant weapons and military equipment are produced either in the EU or in Ukraine,” he said.
