The European Commission has approved €6.1 billion in new defense procurement for Ukraine, with the funding to cover air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radars. The decision was announced on August 24, Ukraine's Independence Day, and is part of the European Union's €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan.
The latest allocation adds to previously approved defense procurement plans worth €16 billion. Of that amount, €8.35 billion has already been allocated to Ukraine under the defense component of the broader loan package.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the new funding was intended to help Ukraine respond to intensified Russian attacks.
“On Ukraine's Independence Day, Europe shows our support is unfaltering and concrete. Today, we have approved €6.1 billion for the air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition and radars that Ukraine urgently needs,” von der Leyen said.
“As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its skies. Europe stands with Ukraine and we will deliver what it needs, when it needs it,” she added.
