Greece’s Aikaterini-Maria Kontochristopoulou won the country’s first fencing gold medal in Mediterranean Games history, defeating Egypt’s Sara Amr Hossny in the women’s foil final in Taranto, Italy.
The Greek fencer beat Hossny 15-13 to claim the title on Monday evening, completing a strong run through the tournament.
Kontochristopoulou defeated Slovenia’s Dorja Blazic 15-13 in the round of 16 before cruising past Italy’s Francesca Palumbo 15-8 in the quarterfinals. She then overcame Spain’s Ariadna Tucker in the semifinals to secure her place in the gold-medal bout.
Kontochristopoulou held off Hossny in a closely contested final to secure the landmark medal for Greek fencing.
