Ultherapy
What An ultrasound treatment that works by directing micro-focused sound waves deep into the skin’s structural layers – including the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), a connective layer that sits between muscle and fat. This thermal energy stimulates fresh collagen production deep within the skin, gradually tightening, lifting and firming the jaw, chin, neck and brows. It remains the only FDA-cleared ultrasound device for skin lifting, though other well-regarded options exist, including Sofwave and HIFU.
Who Anyone who has noticed the creeping effects of skin laxity, which typically emerges as collagen begins to deplete. Safe for all skin tones, it is reportedly used by Jennifer Aniston and Helena Christensen.
What to expect After a conductive gel is applied, a practitioner moves the device over the face for between 30 and 90 minutes. Some spots may feel tingly or pleasantly warm, while more sensitive areas, such as those over bone, the neck or around the eye, may feel a piercing heat that quickly builds then is over in seconds. Results emerge gradually over three to six months and last for a year afterwards.
Downsides Tenderness and swelling are standard. Less common risks include temporary nerve irritation, which can cause facial asymmetry, and fat loss that could accentuate signs of ageing.
