MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Saudel (local name: Obet) is now in the “near Super Typhoon” category as it is set to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this Monday afternoon, according to state meteorologists.
As of 11:00 a.m., the typhoon was located 1,480 kilometers east northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon, packing 175 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center with gustiness of up to 215 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Pagasa classifies a tropical cyclone as a super typhoon if its maximum sustained winds exceed 185 kph.
“This tropical cyclone is currently at near-Super Typhoon category, and further intensification into a Super Typhoon prior to entry or while within PAR is not ruled out,” Pagasa said in its advisory.
